You can add emoticons to a wave in Google wave. To use this feature

1. Add emoticonbot@appspot.com to your contact list

2. Add emoticonbot to a wave where you need to use emoticons

3. When you type emoticon symbols like  :) or :( this will convert to emoticons like the above picture
