The home ministry of India asks the department of telecommunication (DoT) to put all 3G services on hold for security concerns. At present there is no effective system to watch the information shared through 3rd Generation mobile phones. Also the government is not admitted inside the servers used for 3G services. So there may be a chance of leaking important security information since 3G provides services like internet, e-mail, voice chat etc.

The move may affect the year-end schedule for launch of third generation mobile services by private companies if they fail to put in place the required infrastructure to intercept all services including video calls.

It was also suggested to exclude J&K from 3G services due to the current situation there.

At present, only public sector telecom companies - BSNL and MTNL - provide 3G services to nearly 15 lakh and 4 lakh customers respectively across the country.

All issues related to mobile service providers are likely to figure in a meeting called by home ministry on Thursday.
