If you are using Seagate's Hard disk you can use, Seagate’s seatools. Which is having a number of tests and fixes. If you install the application for windows and fail the tests, please download the SeaTools for DOS, Write to a CD or a floppy boot from that and then have a “Long Test”, which will fix Issues.

Western Digital
I use Western Digital Hard Disc. Like SeaTools for Seagate, for Western Digital, it is Data Lifeguard Tools. Use the DOS version if you fail with windows version.
1. Go to this link
2. Choose your product type
3. Choose your product
a. Right click on My Computer, Click Properties
b. Go to Hardware Tab
c. Click Device Manager
d. Expand the Disc Drive (Click the + sign)
e. Note that number
f. On the Step 3 page, when you mouse over on each image it will show the product numbers under each one, find your product Number and chose that.
4. Download corresponding software.
Samsung
For Samsung it is Disk manager
1. Go to the page
2. Choose External or Internal on the left side according to your product
3.Download (Here also you can get for windows or for CD)
Maxtor/Quantum
Maxtor PowerMax utility is designed to perform diagnostic read/write verifications on Maxtor/Quantum hard drives.

These tests will determine hard drive integrity. The POWERMAX.EXE utility is effective on all ATA (IDE) hard drives with a capacity greater than or equal to 500 MB. Maxtor recommends the use of this utility for troubleshooting potential hard drive problems. These problems include, but are not limited to the following:
- Potential hard drive surface problems (eg., bad clusters, bad sectors, partitioning/formatting problems, etc.).
- Drive recognition problems (eg. hard drive that is not recognized by the operating system).
- Software removal.
